Let’s make these beautiful Shell Clay Hearts! Inspiration and credit from Maaike from Hoppin’ Up blog. Link to her blog: https://hoppinup.blogspot.com/2011/07/easy-kids-craft-tutorial.html

This is a perfect way of using any shells you have collected on your holidays and creating a special ornament to remember it by, or you can even buy the shells online.

To make this craft you will need:

  • Shells (make sure they are nice and clean. You can even buy them from craft stores like Hobbycraft or online)

  • Air drying clay

  • Heart cookie cutters (Or if you are cutting the hearts free hand you will need a knife or clay tool)

  • A rolling pin and a flat board/tile to roll on

  • Baking paper

If you want to be able to hang the hearts you will also need:

  • Some string
  • Scissors
  • A skewer/sharp pencil

Instructions below or follow along on our YouTube tutorial, which can be accessed at the bottom of this page.

1.) Start by rolling out the air drying clay. I used a quarter of this block from The Works to create three hearts and rolled it about 1cm thick (if you have big shells, keep the clay thicker).

2.) Use your cookie cutter, to cut out your hearts. If you don’t have a cutter you can go free hand using a knife to cut out a heart shape. I used my heart shaped coaster and cut around that. Peel away your excess clay.

3.) Make sure the edges of the hearts are patted down and smooth before continuing.

4.) If you would like to make the clay hearts into hangings, grab a skewer and pierce a hole near the top. Make sure it is big enough to let string pass through but not too big that the hole breaks.

5.) Press the shells down into the clay. Make sure you press them down deep into the clay so they are firm and secure.

6.) Once you have finished pressing the shells into your clay, place the hearts onto the baking paper and leave them to one side to dry. Mine took around 4-5 days.

7.) When they are completely dry, grab your string and cut it to around 11inches and tie it to your heart, making sure it is secure. You might want to double knot it. Do this to all your clay hearts.

There you have it. Your very own, beautiful shell clay hearts decorations. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
